‘Diane’ reached out to me the other day because she was suffering terribly from acid reflux. She told me that on many occasions her doctor would suggest medication and surgery on her hiatal hernia to manage her heartburn. Diane refused to take any medications, and going under the knife was not an option.
Diane was at a crossroads with her condition. One of her parents died of esophageal cancer, so reaching out to me regarding my Healing Acid Reflux online program seemed like the answer she was looking for.
Diane and I spoke on the phone and discussed what her symptoms were currently. She said that right now she was doing OK because she started drinking shakes from a very reputable source.
“Great,” I said, “so what other foods are you eating that make you feel much better?”
“Nothing, just the shakes for about the last three weeks,” Diane said.
“Hmmm … Diane, you are in your early 60s and hopefully have another 25 to 30 years ahead of you. Do you really think you can live on shakes for the rest of your life?”
Surprisingly, she felt she could. Just shakes for 30 years — can you imagine?
Diane also mentioned that she just started dating, having lost her husband a few years earlier.
“Well Diane,” I said, “what are you going to do on your dates when you go out to dinner? Not eating doesn’t make for a great date.”
After I explained my 7-week program to her, she really felt living on shakes for the rest of her life was the way to go. Why? Because food journaling is part of the program, and she didn’t want to (or didn’t feel she could) do it. I explained that the online forms are short, simple, and easily accessible on your phone or computer. I make it as effortless as possible.
I understood her resistance, so I shared my own story with Diane.
In my 30s I was deciding if I should go back to graduate school to get my Master’s in Education. I remember saying to myself, “Ugh, I really don’t want to want to take tests and write papers for the next two years.” But in the next breath, I said, ”I know when I’m older, I will look back on those two years, and they will be nothing but a blip in time, and I will be rewarded with my master’s degree for the rest of my life.”
“So Diane, the program is only 7 weeks, and you’ll figure out how to eat for the rest of your life. Are you willing to food journal for just 7 weeks? Avoiding food forever is not a reality.”
Diane heard what I was saying, but for right now she felt drinking shakes morning, noon, and night were going to be her way of survival. The shakes were new enough that she wasn’t sick of them yet. They were still yummy and convenient. At some point, she will get bored. She’ll miss different flavors and textures of foods. She’ll want to enjoy holidays and parties and travel. But today, she just wasn’t ready or willing to take the steps to help herself live life to the fullest again.
I have a feeling I’ll be hearing from Diane in the future when the allure of the shakes wears off. I just hope it’s not when she’s saying, “If I only listened and took the program sooner, I could have been enjoying life a lot more.”
Healing Acid Reflux online program is not long, and it’s not hard. But it does require a commitment to healing and change. You have to want a better life than you have now. You have to want great health. You have to be willing to take action. Are you ready? Aren’t you worth it?
