Did you know that when proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s) are taken for an extended period of time it can wreak havoc on your system?

It is only masking your symptoms; the acid is still there, you just can’t feel it. It interferes with vitamins and minerals being absorbed which are essential for your body to be healthy.

Calcium absorption decreases which in turn means you can fracture a hip or wrist much easier. Iron and B12 loss can cause anemia.  It makes you much more susceptible to stomach viruses because gastric acid actually helps in digestion and reducing harmful bacteria that we may ingest, like E. coli, or Salmonella, even C. Diff. Pneumonia is more likely to develop.

Again, this relates to the harmful bacteria in the gut which then travels up the esophagus and gets inhaled into the lungs. When you take PPI’s for over a year, low levels of magnesium can occur which can lead to muscle spasms or even an irregular heartbeat. Lower magnesium can also put you at risk for kidney disease as well as dementia if you are over the age of seventy.

So don’t just settle and think that PPI’s are the answer. The real answer is finding your food and lifestyle triggers.
